Best Bays in Gozo

If sun and sea is what you’re looking for your next holiday, then the island of Gozo will most definitely please you. The island is blessed with 300 days of sunshine and swimming is possible as early as May and well into the month of October. But that’s not just it, you can practically enjoy Gozo’s goreous waters all year round with a variety of sea activities you can do while on holiday here.

The crystal clear waters that surround Gozo’s coast are one of a kind. Here are our top 5-bays to enjoy while on a Gozo holiday.

1. Mġarr ix-Xini

Being from Xewkija, this is most definitely our favourite bay as we’ve been frequenting it ever since we were young children with no care in the world. The bay is within walking distance from our properties and we cannot recommend it enough for a nice swim. Mġarr ix-Xini gained world-wide popularity when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie chose it for their 2015 movie By the Sea and has since seen many people flock to the area to enjoy this inlet’s natural beauty.

Mġarr ix-Xini might get a tad busy during the peak season, especially during weekends, so our tip is to go enjoy a swim early in the morning. Early morning, on a fine summer’s day, you find very few or no people swimming, and the sea is usually very calm. Trust us, follow this tip, Mġarr ix-Xini will bring you peace and tranquility like nowhere else.

2. Wied il-Għasri

This is another pebbly bay that is up there with our favourites. This bay is relatively hidden so getting there takes a bit of an effort. You’ll have to walk a short dirt track and then go down about 100 steps. Keep a camera handy as, on your way down the stairs, you’ll be able to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds you. Don’t let the climb back up dishearten you though, swimming at Wied l-Għasri is completely worth it!

Apart from swimmers looking for a quiet spot to relax, Mġarr ix-Xini is also sought by divers who like to explore the surrounding underwater caves.

3. Għar Qawqla

Much to our surprise, this rocky bay is still relatively unknown, especially when compared to other swimming spots in Marsalforn. Għar Qawqla caters for swimmers with any level of experience, as it has areas that are ideal for experienced swimmers and other areas that are good for beginners. There’s little shade here but you can rent a sunbed and umbrella for little cost.

Please always be vigilant when swimming at Għar Qawqla and do not risk jumping into the water on stormy days when an underwater current develops.

4. Ramla Bay

This is undoubtly Gozo’s most popular beach, and is often lauded as the best beach on the Maltese islands. Indeed, Ramla Bay is a place with exceptional natural beauty where you can swim, snorkel or just sunbathe in Gozo’s glorious sunshine.

Due to its wide stretch of ‘red’ sand, the beach is often referred to by locals as “Ir-Ramla l-Ħamra”, meaning the red sand beach.

Apart from serving as a very important recreational area, Ramla is also a site with huge natural and historical importance. The beach is home to the island’s only sand dunes and Roman remains also lie beneath the sands.

5. Daħlet Qorrot

This is a favourite haunt for locals from the village of Nadur. The bay has a pebbly beach as well as a quayside and rocks on either side that can take you straight into the crystal clear deep water. Daħlet Qorrot is still widely used by fishermen who have their stores in the area or closeby. Our tip is to get a traditional Gozo ftira from Nadur’s popular bakeries and enjoy it to the beautiful setting of this gorgeous little bay.

The good thing about Gozitan beaches is that they tend to be much quieter than those on mainland Malta. Enjoying a refreshing swim in a peaceful and tranquil environment is still very much possible on the tiny island of Gozo.
